In 2018, Ajay Deora, leveraging his extensive background in e-commerce, business, and technology, launched Ticketbox.mu, an innovative platform swiftly redefining Mauritius’s online booking and ticketing landscape. This venture has since emerged as a key player in the sector, challenging industry standards and setting new benchmarks.
Ajay Deora, the brain behind Ticketbox.mu, carries a rich experience spanning over two decades, marked by significant roles in top-tier tech companies in the UK. His expertise in User Experience and Product Development, combined with his deep-rooted connection to Mauritius, fueled the inception of Ticketbox.mu. The platform was conceived as a response to the unmet need for high-quality booking services in Mauritius, reflecting Deora’s commitment to bridging his homeland with global technological advancements. “This commitment to my roots culminated in the creation of Ticketbox.mu, a dynamic booking engine crafted in Mauritius, tailored explicitly for Mauritians for a lack of good service on the market. My journey is a testament to the power of passion and expertise converging for a greater cause”, he says to Investor’s Mag.
Discussing the platform’s trajectory, Deora remarks, “Our focus on customer experience has catalyzed our growth, seeing our user base and revenue scale up remarkably. By constantly upgrading our technology, Ticketbox.mu stays ahead in the competitive market, offering unparalleled service to our users.”
He further sheds light on the economic impact of the platform: “The event sector is vital to Mauritius’s economy, drawing tourists and highlighting international artists. This boosts the country’s image as a premier destination and contributes to the tourism sector’s growth.”
At the core of Ticketbox.mu’s success is its advanced technological infrastructure. “Our platform, built on the latest tech stack, is at the forefront of digital marketing innovations, aiming to connect deeply with our audience in Mauritius. Our goal extends beyond mere business introduction; we focus on enhancing the visibility and impact of our partners’ offerings,” explains Deora. This approach has translated into interesting metrics for the platform: over 90,000 monthly website visits, a robust social media presence with 46,000 followers on Facebook, 38,000 on TikTok, and 12,000 on Instagram, along with a substantial database of 80,000 emails.
Reflecting on the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Deora notes, “The pandemic was a critical phase, but it also offered a chance to highlight the efficiency of online transactions. We pivoted our focus towards self-service booking and trust-building in our user experience.” This period saw Ticketbox.mu not only sustain but also expand its operations, growing its team from 2 to 15 employees within 18 months, and remarkably selling over 200,000 event tickets and processing more than 6,000 hotel bookings since the easing of pandemic restrictions.
The journey of Ticketbox.mu, steered by Deora’s vision and expertise, is a testament to the transformative power of technology when aligned with the specific needs of a local market. The platform’s success story stands as a beacon of innovation and growth in the Mauritian digital landscape.
