On November 22, the Newrest Group inaugurated its catering unit in Mauritius dedicated to the airline sector. This ceremony underscores substantial investments aimed at enhancing working conditions and productivity, while also minimizing the site’s carbon footprint.
Since January 2023, Newrest has been operating in Mauritius following the acquisition of EIH Flight Services Ltd, a company owned by EIH Limited (Oberoi). Through this operation, the group offers catering services to airlines, including Air Mauritius.
The production unit underwent significant upgrades to align with sector quality standards and meet the expectations of national and international clients regarding food safety. Newrest relies on the expertise and experience of its Mauritian employees, who joined during the change of ownership, to manage this new production facility. These investments indicate the international group’s backing for the island’s tourism and economic development.
Investments for a Sustainable Unit
An investment of over 7 million euros enabled the catering group to develop an innovative, efficient, and sustainable unit.
Olivier Sadran, co-president and founder of the Newrest Group, stated, “From the start, we had the ambition to make the necessary investments to significantly improve the sustainability of our activities. Mauritius is a natural environment that must be preserved for future generations. We have a role to play in the country’s transportation and tourism equation. It is also our responsibility to provide an efficient and safe working environment for our team.”
Following a comprehensive assessment of energy consumption, an innovative approach to energy transition was implemented through an investment in NEMO GREEN. This digital platform enables the management team to monitor the energy consumption of various equipment and areas on the site. Corrective measures and training can be implemented promptly upon identifying any deviations.
These measures are complemented by the use of LED lamps, the installation of solar lamps outdoors, and the integration of solar panels for hot water and energy production. Energy-efficient equipment has been introduced to replace existing ones.
Additionally, six new catering trucks were ordered, with two already received from South Africa. The remaining four are anticipated to arrive by the end of January 2024.
Examples of initiatives taken by the Newrest Group as part of its 7 million euro investment:
- A more efficient heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system on the roof, along with new hot kitchen extraction towers, significantly reduce energy consumption and improve air quality for the team.
- 25 solar water heaters are now connected to the water network, limiting the use of diesel water heaters.
- A first for the group, the use of a reflective sealing system cools the building while ensuring waterproofing.
- Existing solar panels already produce part of the electricity needs. Inside the unit:|
- Installation of cold rooms and insulating panels throughout the catering unit for better working conditions and impermeability to dust and insects.
- Newrest’s famous non-slip green floor has replaced the old tiles for improved workplace safety.
- A brand-new dishwashing system allows significant water and detergent savings.
